Anthony Mancuso , MD

Professor & Chairman, Neuroradiology staff physician

Tony is the Champion and leader of WIDI projects and also a key ENT contributor. In 1983, Dr. Mancuso joined the faculty at University of Florida College of Medicine, within the UF Health System, to direct the development of the MRI clinical and clinical research program. In 2000, he became Chairman of the Department of Radiology and remains in that position currently. He is also the President of the Florida Group Clinical Practice Association at UF Health.

Anthony Mancuso, MD

Dr. Mancuso graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1973 being elected to AOA in his junior year. He then completed a Residency and fellowship training in Diagnostic Radiology, including 2 years of subspecialty Neuroradiology training, at UCLA Health and the University of Utah. As a resident and then faculty member at UCLA Health he was fortunate to form an enduring relationship with a founding member of organized Neuroradiology in the United States, Dr. William Hanafee, as his friend and lifelong mentor. Dr. Mancuso owes much of the professional development in his career to Dr. Hanafee both with regard to his dedication to development of effective educational methodology and a devotion to discovery of practices that make a positive impact on patient care. He is a past President of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology and Senior Member of the American Society of Neuroradiology.

Specialization

Dr. Mancuso is an acknowledged international expert in the area of ENT radiology having been recognized for his achievements by Gold Medals from the American and European Societies of Head and Neck radiology and a Presidential Citation from the American Society of Head and Neck Surgery. He has over 170 refereed publications most in the area of Head and Neck Radiology, and has written several books, most recently, a comprehensive 3 volume text covering the clinical practice of head and neck imaging.

Linda Lanier , MD

Associate Chairman & Associate Professor, Education & Simulation

Linda has lead the development of the WIDI SIM project since its inception. WIDI SIM reflects her professional dedication to the use of interactive medical media in education. A product of a liberal arts education (Furman University, 1971) Dr. Lanier had not always thought medicine to be her calling. She had traveled the world, participated in archeologic excavations in Israel, danced with a college USO troupe, worked in Public Relations/Marketing for a large banking system, taken Masters courses in Journalism, and had worked at both a PBS affiliate in Gainesville and an NBC News affiliate in Seattle, before deciding to become a physician with a primary interest in medical media. She entered The University of Florida Medical School at age 30, graduating AOA in 1985, at which time she also received the American Medical Women’s Outstanding Achievement Award. She undertook her Diagnostic Radiology residency at The University of Florida and became an Assistant Professor in Body Imaging at UF in 1989.

Linda Lanier, MD

Realizing the emergence of medical imaging as fundamental to patient care and acutely aware that existing medical student curricula in the 1980s lacked education in diagnostic imaging, Dr. Lanier asked for, and was assigned, the task of creating a required curriculum in Diagnostic Imaging for Medical Students at UF. The curriculum included credit based, required coursework in imaging at the basic science level, required scope rounds during clinical rotations, and 9 electives in imaging for seniors, all taught by radiologists. This model was the first of its kind in the country and was shared at the national level with other radiologist educators (AAMC, AUR, AMSER). In 2010, Dr. Lanier became part of the formative team of the WIDI Project (“Wisdom in Diagnostic Imaging”©) an innovative, web-based, educational and assessment tool created by the UF Department of Radiology, led by Dr. Anthony Mancuso. Dr. Lanier’s primary focus since that time has been to serve as lead architect, educational designer, and content author in the development of the “Emergent/Critical Care Imaging Simulation©”, now WIDI-SIM©, a true-to-life competency assessment tool currently in its 7th year of use at programs across the country. She has worked closely with co-author, Dr. Sistrom, who has designed systems for the accumulation, organization, and analysis of data, and with other faculty who have provided cases and subspecialty expertise. The “Simulation” assesses competencies in Observation, Interpretation, Knowledge, and Communication skills, and provides opportunities to identify personal, programmatic, and universal knowledge gaps. Once identified, users are able to re-educate or improve skills via the “WIDI Learn©” platform… thus completing the educational cycle and helping professionals move toward greater competency and a higher quality of patient care.

Activities and Accomplishments

Dr. Lanier served as the course director for the courses offered at the University of Florida and its affiliate PIMS, the budding Florida State Medical School, until 1999. During this time, she was awarded 3 “Teacher of the Year” Awards at UF, 1 “Teacher of the Year” Award at FSU, several resident teaching awards, and the prestigious campus-wide “TIP Award” for teaching excellence at the University of Florida. She was selected to be a charter member of the “Society of Teaching Scholars” at the College of Medicine and served on the Board for the Master’s Program in Medical Education. The supporting, interactive electronic textbook created for the first year course “Radiologic Anatomy©” (Lanier, Rathe, Seymour), won several technical and educational awards and was the founding component of the “Integrated Medical Curriculum©, published by Gold Standard Multimedia, Inc. in 1992. In 1994, she became an Associate Professor. From 1992-1998, Dr. Lanier worked part time with GSM as Executive Producer developing web based educational tools and working with authors, nationally and internationally, to develop interactive digital and web-based medical texts. GSM was subsequently purchased by Elsevier, and the Integrated Medical Curriculum was licensed by DxR Development.

From 1992-2010, Dr. Lanier served in a variety of Administrative roles at UF in addition to teaching and clinical work. She served on all of the “triad of fundamental committees” for the College of Medicine (Admissions, Academic Status, Curriculum), and was selected by the Dean to serve as Chairman of the Medical Selection-Admissions Committee and subsequently as Chair of the Academic Status Committee, for several years. A mammographer, she also served at the Medical Director of “Park Avenue Imaging Center” from 1996-1999. In 2003-2005, Dr. Lanier authored two grants from RSNA and worked closely with co-authors (Dr. Chris Sistrom and Dr. Richard Rathe) to develop “The Curriculum in Radiology Reporting©” an interactive web-based program that is still in use to help improve reporting and communication skills for residents. From 2002-2005, Dr. Lanier was invited to serve on USMLE Step 1 Committee in Philadelphia to help augment/improve the boards by including Diagnostic Imaging in the exam items. She also served on several national committees in imaging education, including the Committee on Teaching in Radiology (AUR). In 2004, Dr. Lanier became the “Associate Chairman of Community Clinical Radiology Services” for UF and was the “Radiology Medical Director” for 5 community hospitals affiliated with the University of Florida/Shands Hospital system, now UF Health.

Chris Sistrom , MD MPH PhD

Chris is a key contributor to all WIDI projects, leading data analysis, and curating medical terminology. He has been doing scholarly research and publishing about radiology appropriateness and utilization management since 1993 and has been continuously involved in developing the informatics infrastructure for the AC resulting in several seminal papers about imaging appropriateness concepts and use of order entry decision support in managing imaging utilization. This work has expanded to include stewardship of ACRSelect EMR embedded decision support which is now delivered internationally by National Decision Support Company (NDSC).

Chris Sistrom, MD MPH PhD

As part of an ongoing relationship between MGH and the Schneider Institutes at Brandeis University, Dr. Sistrom led a collaboration (beginning in 2012) between the two organizations to use Medicare claims to analyze imaging utilization patterns across geographic service areas. In addition to articulating and quantifying geographic variation in imaging use intensity and mixture, the project generated a general taxonomy of imaging utilization in a population and methods for display of these patterns for resource use planning. During this time, Dr. Sistrom became familiar with Chris Tompkins PhD and other faculty in the Schneider Institutes and their ongoing work on the Episode Grouper for Medicare (EGM) Project. He has subsequently joined the Brandeis faculty as Distinguished Scientist to participate in the core team executing the EGM effort. Education

After serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a cryptographer from 1973-1977, Chris Sistrom, MD, MPH, PhD obtained his undergraduate degree in Computer Science (1980) from the University of Oregon in Eugene. Medical school and radiology residency were performed at Oregon Health Sciences University (1984) and University of Virginia (1988). He was Assistant Professor of Radiology at UVA after residency before going into private radiology practice from 1994-1998. His most recent position is at University of Florida in Gainesville (since 1999) where he is now Associate Chairman and Information Officer of the Radiology Department of the College of Medicine. During this time, Dr. Sistrom obtained an MPH degree in epidemiology and health policy in 2003 from the University of Florida, College of Public Health and a PhD in Health Services Research in 2010.

Dr. Sistrom's master’s thesis explored the information transmission efficiency of various formats of radiology reports to referring clinicians. This research focus prompted interest by other UF Radiology faculty (e.g., Drs. Mancuso and Lanier) and the--now considerably enhanced--team performed further, grant funded, research into methods for teaching radiology residents to produce consistent, accurate, and actionable interpretative reports for imaging studies. The Wisdom in Diagnostic Imaging (WIDI) program/product lines are a direct outgrowth of these early efforts.

The topic of his dissertation was Factors Affecting Outpatient Imaging Utilization In Primary Care Practice. This involved analyzig imaging utilization data and comprehensive risk adjustment and demographic information from patients regularly seen by primary care doctors at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Since the dissertation, Dr. Sistrom has worked with the MGH Physician’s Organization as the lead analyst for their population based provider resource utilization management efforts. In addition to imaging, this effort has expanded to include laboratory and other ancillary services, referrals to specialists, ED visits and Inpatient stays for the population of the whole Partners Healthcare System.

Ronald Quisling , MD

Professor Emeritus

Ron has had an interest in Critical Care Radiology training for more than 20 years. It was born out of requests from the Critical Care Physician (ER) service to ensure that after hour imaging reports from residents and fellows were reliable, especially for the major critical care subjects. Dr. Quisling developed a Critical Care Lecture Series given to residents and fellows each week. Measurements of error rates were made prior to and after the lectures series was begun and error rates had dropped to very acceptable levels. This Lecture Series, which has proven to be effective, forms the basis for the subject matter in the WIDI Learn Series.

Ronald Quisling, MD

Dr. Quisling graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School-Madison in 1969. He continued with his surgical internship at the University of Texas-Southwestern. In 1970 he began his Radiology residency at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where he also completed residency a 2 year NINDS sponsored Neuroradiology Fellowship. Dr. Quisling had been drafted into the military in 1970, but was deferred for Neuroradiology fellowship training until 1974. He was sent to Martin Army Hospital at Fort Benning, GA for two years. While there, he developed a Neuroradiology Referral service for Army Hospitals in the southeast including interventional and diagnostic services. In 1976 Dr. Quisling joined the Radiology Department at the University of Florida Medical Center. Dr. Quisling spent his entire 41 year professional career there, during which time he was the director of the Neuroradiology Division. Currently, Dr. Quisling is an emeritus Professor still working in the department on educational projects, such as WIDI Learn Project.

Area of Expertise

Dr. Quisling has been the Divisional Head of Neuroradiology from 1977 to 2015. He has special expertise in interventional Neuroradiology, which he practiced from 1976 until 1996. Along with his Neurosurgical cohorts, they introduced many special interventional techniques, especially in the transvenous treatment of vein of Galen AV fistulae. He has always practiced diagnostic neuroradiology, but has been part of the University of Florida Brain Tumor (adult and pediatric) consortium and the UF Epilepsy Consortium. He has also been involved with the Pediatric Neonatal Service. Dr Quisling has published multiple Neuroradiology textbooks, many Chapters, and over 120 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Quisling was instrumental in founding the Southeastern Neuroradiology Society. Currently, he is a Professor-emeritus, and functioning mainly in developing the Neuroradiology component of the WIDI Learn Project.

Roberta Moore “Robbie” Slater, MD

Dr. Slater practiced general radiology for twenty years years in both hospital and outpatient locations. Returning to the University of Florida in 2007, she began working in adult and pediatric body imaging. Dr. Slater has focused on teaching residents and medical students for the last ten years, sharing her extensive knowledge of the culture and business of private practice. As a member of the faculty, Dr. Slater especially enjoyed working one-on-one with residents, always with "classic rock" playing in the background. She has been the recipient of several "Exemplary Teacher" awards from the University of Florida, College of Medicine.

Dr. Slater’s passion for collecting teaching cases has led to her dedication to the WIDI Learn/SIM project as a content contributor. As a third generation physician, she is proud to have a son who will soon carry on the legacy and tradition of patient care into the fourth generation. Besides enjoying her family and professional life, Dr. Slater is fond of riding waves in the summer, snow in the winter, and horses any time.

Education

Dr. Slater graduated AOA from the Medical College of Georgia with honors in 1981. After two years in General Surgery at the University of Kentucky, she relocated to the University of Florida and completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology where she served as the first female Chief Resident in the radiology program.

Dhanashree (Dhana) Rajderkar, MD

A strong clinician, Dr Rajderkar aspires to ensure her trainees equally possess the essential skills of a radiologist, including visual expertise, attention to detail, critical thinking, and excellent communication skills. Dr Rajderkar’s dedication to research is evidenced by her many peer-reviewed publications and scientific/oral presentations. However, her soul lies in resident education, and she has recently devoted the majority of her time to assist residents with presenting more than 40 educational exhibits at the local, national and international levels since joining the Department of Radiology in July 2014. She believes that as a teacher, she can cultivate a very successful generation of future radiologists.

Training and Education

Dr Rajderkar hails from India, where she completed medical school, radiology training, and worked as a faculty member at Indira Gandhi Medical College.
Dr Rajderkar was also trained at prestigious Radiology institute in the United States - Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri. She completed 4 clinical fellowships including training in Nuclear Medicine for 2 years, 1 in Neuroradiology and 1 in Pediatric Radiology. She has American Board of Radiology and American Board of Nuclear Medicine certifications. During her training, Dr Rajderkar developed a passion for resident teaching and education. She has subsequently worked extensively in academic radiology settings across the globe.
